Common Characteristics of Keratoconus

Distorted / Double vision
Extreme sensitivity to light
Cloudy Vision
Eye Allergies
Connective tissue disorders like “Marfan syndrome” or “Ehlers-Danlos syndrome”.

Causes of Keratoconus

Genetics:

Keratoconus often has a genetic component, meaning it can run in families. Specific gene variations can lead to structural weaknesses in the cornea, increasing the risk of this condition.

Eye Rubbing:

Excessive and persistent eye rubbing can weaken the corneal tissue, potentially triggering or exacerbating keratoconus. Rubbing can create irregularities in the cornea’s shape over time.

Allergies and Eye Irritants:

Chronic exposure to allergens or eye irritants can lead to frequent eye rubbing and inflammation, contributing to the development or progression of keratoconus. Avoiding triggers is crucial.

Frequently Asked Question's

Mantra Foundation is dedicated to enhancing eye health by facilitating access to advanced treatments for conditions like keratoconus. By referring individuals to reputable eye facilities, Mantra Foundation ensures that those affected by keratoconus receive timely and effective treatments, such as corneal cross-linking or corneal transplants, thereby contributing to improved vision and quality of life.

How long it takes to recover from Keratoconus treatment varies depending on the person. In general, people can go back to their regular activities within 2-4 weeks. To improve your chances for a successful outcome, be sure follow your surgeon’s instructions during recovery.

Following the Keratoconus treatment, the patient will receive a soft bandage contact lens and antibiotic eye drops. The procedure itself is painless, taking about an hour to complete, after which a protective patch is applied to the treated eye.

It’s recommended to take 5-7 days off work following the procedure, as the bandage lens is typically removed on Day 4, and it may take another couple of days to feel completely symptom-free. You can resume using your old glasses immediately, while contact lenses can generally be worn after about 10-15 days.
